Dartmouth Community Concert Association (DCCA) presents the fourth concert in its 2019-20 season, From Russia With Love, with Paul Merkelo, trumpet and Serhiy Salov, piano, on Friday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. Exploring some of the greatest works by Slavic composers, the duo is undertaking a nine-concert tour throughout Atlantic Canada with classical presenter, Debut Atlantic. Their performance features works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Chopin, Scriabin and Shostakovich, amongst others.

JUNO-nominated Paul Merkelo is recognized as “a spectacular soloist…a most impressive master of his instrument” (Montreal Gazette) with “unusual lyrical gifts” (Gramophone).  Principal trumpet with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal since 1994, he has been featured frequently with the OSM, including tours to South America.  He is the first member of the orchestra to be invited to record a debut solo album with the orchestra (French concertos – Kent Nagano).

Pianist Serhiy Salov is recognized as an outstanding pianist, known for his remarkable technique and virtuosity, and for his piano transcriptions of symphonic works such as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, and many others.  After beginning piano in Ukraine, he pursued studies in London, obtaining a Master’s degree from the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, followed by a Doctor of Music degree from the Université de Montréal. Mr. Salov recently made his debut with Symphony Nova Scotia, and is the winner of many competitions.

Also appearing on the concert is grade six pianist, Alex Yang.  Alex will play Clair de Lune by Debussy and Fantasie-Impromptu Op. 66 by Chopin. A student of Professor Lynn Stodola, he won First Place in both piano and violin (age 10 group) in the Canadian Music Competition in 2019, and has performed with the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra.  He also sings with the Halifax Boys Honour Choir, and composes.

All DCCA concerts take place on Friday or Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at Woodlawn United Church, 54 Woodlawn Road in Dartmouth, which is fully wheelchair accessible.  Individual concert tickets are $25 regular price, $20 for seniors (age 60+) and $10 for students.  You can purchase tickets at the door or order tickets via Paypal online through the DCCA website.  Please call (902) 433-1680 for more information.

DCCA is a non-profit, civic organization dedicated to presenting quality entertainment for the entire family at affordable prices. Since 1957, the DCCA has been one of Canada’s premiere presenters of classical music, providing local audiences with concerts ranging from The Elora Singers to Foothills Brass.  Originally part of a network of community concert presenters across Canada, Dartmouth is the only one remaining in the Maritimes. The organization is entirely supported by volunteer efforts. DCCA has a reciprocal arrangement with Antigonish Performing Arts Series.
