For our first-ever Musician-of-the-Month feature, CCNS is happy to introduce Halifax-based artist Peter Allen!

Peter Allen is well respected across Canada as a concert pianist, composer, conductor and teacher. He performs solo recitals, chamber music and concertos with orchestras. He has two solo CDs to his credit as well as numerous duo CDs with flautist Patricia Creighton.

Allen has composed over 100 pieces for piano, as well as much chamber music including a string quartet and other string music, and numerous pieces for wind instruments. He has written music for band, choir and orchestra. He also composed the Hurricane Juan Piano Concerto, which was commissioned by the CBC. Peter is a Professor of Music at Dalhousie University at the Fountain School of Performing Arts.


1.  Are you working on any new compositions? A piece for Clarinet and String Quartet.

2.  What are you looking forward to doing this summer when the spring term ends? Enjoying the sunshine and outdoors as much as possible.

3.  Have you got a favourite movie or TV series these days? Not so much these days…..I prefer older things. Though I do try to find a comedy to end the day with.

4.  What is something you would like to have told your 20 year-old self? Everything I tell my students now.

5.  What recording (s) would you take with you to a desert island? Beethoven’s 9th symphony, Brahms d minor piano concerto.

6.  What is a fun fact that your fans do not know about you? I play baseball. I am a film historian.
